Shany Erkin lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Her photography is driven by a sense of urgency. Certain places make her heart race and insist she raise her camera. She moves quickly, guided by instinct, until the image is complete. There is an intensity to these moments, a feeling that something must be held, remembered, or understood before it disappears. The work begins in that tension, somewhere between desire and attention, between noticing and acting.

After graduating from Parsons School of Design in 2022 with a B.F.A. in Photography, she participated in a mentorship program at Magnum Photos under the guidance of Susan Meiselas and Matt Black. Since then, she has been working within arts nonprofits across New York City.
